Avigdor Arikha was a Romanian-born French-Israeli artist, printmaker, and art historian renowned for his rigorous observational approach to painting. After surviving the Holocaust, he studied at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became celebrated for his intensely focused life drawings and paintings executed in a single sitting, as well as his scholarly work on Nicolas Poussin.
