Playskool Gym, from the Playskool series
1983
Frank Stella's *Playskool Gym* (1983) is a dynamic, large-scale mixed-media construction that combines hand-colored patinated cast bronze, fabricated aluminum, wood, steel, plastic, and screenprint into an exuberant, three-dimensional composition. Drawing inspiration from children's toys, the work bursts with bold, curvilinear forms and vibrant color, reflecting Stella's move away from minimalism toward maximalist, relief-based sculpture. The piece exemplifies his ongoing exploration of the boundary between painting and sculpture, transforming industrial and everyday materials into a visually energetic, playful whole.
