Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) was one of the most prolific and popular Japanese ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period. He specialized in kabuki actor portraits and bijin-e (pictures of beautiful women), becoming the leading print designer of his time. His works exemplified the Utagawa school's dominance in 19th-century Japanese woodblock printing.
