Sir William Orpen (1878–1931) was one of the most celebrated Irish portrait painters of his era, renowned for his technically brilliant and psychologically penetrating likenesses of society figures, politicians, and military leaders. A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, he became the official British war artist during World War I, producing unflinching depictions of the Western Front that stand among the most powerful works of that conflict. His portraits commanded extraordinary prices during his lifetime and continue to achieve strong results at major auction houses including Christie's, Sotheby's, and Bonhams.
