Senufo Zoomorphic Helmet Mask, Côte d'Ivoire

The Senufo people of Côte d'Ivoire are renowned for their rich tradition of ceremonial masking, with zoomorphic helmet masks serving central roles in Poro society initiation rites and funerary ceremonies. These powerful objects synthesize features of multiple animals — including the crocodile, warthog, and chameleon — into a composite spiritual form believed to embody ancestral and supernatural forces. Carved predominantly by hereditary blacksmith clans known as the Kule, these masks represent one of the most distinctive sculptural traditions in West African art.
