Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard was a prominent Danish neoclassical painter, sculptor, and architect who served as a professor of painting, mythology, and anatomy at the New Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. He was a highly influential figure in Danish art, whose works adorned prestigious royal residences including Christiansborg Palace, Fredensborg Palace, and Levetzau Palace at Amalienborg. His mastery of history painting and classical themes made him one of the most significant artists of his era in Scandinavia.
