Matthias Withoos

Matthias Withoos (1627, 1703) was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his detailed depictions of landscapes, plants, insects, and animals, often set in atmospheric, sometimes nocturnal settings. He studied under Jacob van Campen and later worked in Amersfoort and Amsterdam, developing a distinctive style that blended naturalistic observation with a sense of melancholy grandeur. His works frequently appeared in European collections and continue to be sought after in the Old Masters market at major auction houses.
