Kikuji Yamashita (1937, 1971) was a Japanese avant-garde artist associated with the postwar Jikken Kōbō (Experimental Workshop) collective and later with radical artistic movements in Japan. His work encompassed painting, assemblage, and happenings, often incorporating found objects and politically charged imagery that challenged the boundaries of conventional art. Yamashita is regarded as a significant, if underrecognized, figure in postwar Japanese art whose provocative practice bridged abstract expressionism and conceptual tendencies.
