Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger (1814, 1883) was a French sculptor and painter renowned for his technically virtuosic and often controversial works. He gained notoriety with his provocative sculpture 'Woman Bitten by a Snake' (1847), which caused a sensation at the Paris Salon. His work bridged Romanticism and Realism, and he was also known for his portraits and funerary monuments.
