Fritz Winter

Fritz Winter (1905–1976) was a pioneering German abstract painter who studied at the Bauhaus under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Oskar Schlemmer. After being banned by the Nazi regime and enduring years as a prisoner of war, he re-emerged as a leading figure in post-war European abstraction, co-founding the artists' group ZEN 49. His expressive, gestural compositions are characterized by bold, earthy tones and dynamic forms that bridge Abstract Expressionism and European Informel.
