Deborah Willis is an acclaimed American photographer, curator, and cultural historian whose work explores the intersection of race, beauty, identity, and the Black experience in America. She is a University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, and has received numerous prestigious awards including the MacArthur 'Genius' Fellowship. Her extensive body of work spans fine art photography, historical scholarship, and curatorial practice, examining how African Americans have been represented in and shaped visual culture.
