Carlo Saraceni was an Italian Baroque painter born in Venice who spent most of his career in Rome, where he became deeply influenced by Caravaggio's dramatic use of light and shadow. He is known for his intimate religious compositions, often featuring small-scale figures set against atmospheric nocturnal or candlelit backgrounds. His work bridges the Venetian colorist tradition with the Roman Caravaggesque style, and he is particularly celebrated for his altarpieces and devotional cabinet paintings.
