Turiya Magadlela is a South African artist based in Johannesburg whose practice centers on the use of nylon stockings and pantyhose as her primary medium, stretching and layering these materials over frames to create abstract paintings that explore themes of race, gender, and the Black female body. Her work engages deeply with the history and politics of South Africa, using a material intimately associated with Black women's domestic labor and bodily experience to produce luminous, atmospheric compositions. Magadlela has gained significant international recognition, exhibiting at major institutions and art fairs globally, and is considered a significant voice in contemporary African art.
