Roelant Savery was a Flemish-born painter who became a prominent figure in the Dutch Golden Age, celebrated for his richly detailed depictions of animals, landscapes, and floral still lifes. He worked at the courts of Holy Roman Emperors Rudolf II and Matthias in Prague and Vienna, where he was commissioned to paint exotic animals and fantastical natural scenes. Savery is particularly noted for his paintings of the dodo bird, which remain among the most important visual records of the now-extinct species.
