Peter De Wint was a British watercolorist of Dutch descent, born in Stone, Staffordshire, who became one of the most celebrated landscape painters of the English Romantic era. Trained initially under the engraver John Raphael Smith and later studying at the Royal Academy, De Wint developed a distinctive style characterized by broad, luminous washes of warm color, capturing the pastoral beauty of the English countryside with remarkable freshness and spontaneity. He was particularly associated with the landscapes of Lincolnshire, where his wife's family had connections, and he returned repeatedly to paint its flat, expansive fields, harvest scenes, and river views with an unaffected naturalism that set him apart from more theatrical Romantic contemporaries.
