Li Songsong (born 1973, Beijing) is a Chinese contemporary painter known for his large-scale oil paintings that draw from mass media imagery, historical photographs, and propaganda pictures, transforming them through thick, heavily impastoed brushwork that obscures and fragments the source material. His work explores themes of collective memory, Chinese history, and the tension between image and paint, often rendering politically charged or historically significant photographs in a manner that simultaneously reveals and conceals their original meaning. He is considered one of the most significant painters to emerge from China in the post-1990s generation and has exhibited internationally at major galleries and institutions.
