Justine Kurland is an American photographer known for her large-format photographs exploring themes of utopia, female community, adolescent rebellion, and the American landscape. Her early series 'Girl Pictures' (1997, 2002) depicted groups of teenage girls inhabiting wild, pastoral settings in acts of freedom and communion, drawing on the tradition of American landscape photography while subverting its male-dominated legacy. Her later work includes 'Spirit West,' which documents her cross-country travels with her young son, and 'Highway Kind,' a book published in 2016 that examines the nomadic subculture of train-hoppers and itinerant communities across the American West.
