James Edward Buttersworth (1817–1894) was a British-born American painter celebrated for his detailed and dramatic marine paintings, particularly of yacht racing scenes and naval battles. He emigrated to the United States around 1845 and became the preeminent marine artist of his era, closely associated with depicting the golden age of American yachting. His works are highly sought after at auction, with pieces regularly achieving six-figure sums at major houses including Sotheby's and Christie's.
