Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957–1996) was a Cuban-born American conceptual artist whose minimalist installations explored themes of love, loss, memory, and political activism, often through the use of everyday materials such as candy, lightbulbs, clocks, and printed paper stacks. His practice was deeply influenced by the AIDS crisis and the death of his partner Ross Laycock, imbuing seemingly simple objects with profound emotional and political resonance. Gonzalez-Torres is widely regarded as one of the most significant artists of the late 20th century, represented by the Andrea Rosen Gallery and the subject of a major retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum.
