Dirck Jaspersz. van Baburen was a Dutch Golden Age painter born around 1595 in Wijk bij Duurstede, Netherlands. He was a prominent member of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, a group of Dutch painters who were deeply influenced by the dramatic chiaroscuro style of Caravaggio after traveling to Rome. His works are celebrated for their bold use of light and shadow, religious subjects, and genre scenes.
