Chung Sang-hwa is a pioneering Korean abstract painter born in 1932, recognized as a leading figure of the Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) movement that emerged in South Korea during the 1970s. His signature technique involves applying kaolin-mixed paint to canvas, folding and creasing it while wet, then peeling back sections to reveal a distinctive grid-like texture of exposed lines and raw surface. Long underappreciated internationally, he gained major global recognition in the 2010s through retrospectives and strong auction results at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillips.
