Carl Borromäus Andreas Ruthart (c. 1630–1703) was a German-born Baroque painter renowned for his dynamic depictions of wild animals, particularly predatory beasts such as lions, leopards, and bears engaged in combat or hunting scenes. He trained and worked across several European centers, including Venice and Rome, where he was influenced by Flemish animal painters and developed a powerful, energetic style. Later in life he entered the Augustinian order and became a monk, though his animal paintings remained highly sought after by collectors.
