Five Drafts (Simulator)
Thomas Demand 's Five Drafts (Simulator) is a complete suite of five digital pigment prints on photo rag paper, each measuring 28 × 28 cm (32.5 × 32.5 cm framed). The photographs depict cardboard models in various stages of assembly, reflecting the artist's process-driven practice of building and photographing ephemeral paper constructions. In this suite, Demand offers a rare glimpse into the provisional stages of his meticulously constructed paper models. Rather than presenting the polished, illusionistic environments for which he is best known, Five Drafts (Simulator) foregrounds the studio process itself, revealing scissors, cardboard fragments, and geometric forms as building blocks of his staged realities. By documenting these drafts, Demand emphasizes the labor and artifice behind his artworks, underscoring his interest in how photography mediates perception and truth. Published in a limited edition of 60 plus proofs, one sheet in this set is signed, dated, and annotated BAT (bon à tirer) by the artist, with the remaining prints marked "ok" in pencil. This suite stands as a significant example of Demand's photographic practice and his sustained investigation into the relationship between construction, documentation, and illusion.
