“It often reminds me of the autofocus of a digital camera, which doesn’t know what to do with a silver painting’s surface when I’m trying to document the work. It goes in and out, unable to separate the painting’s present surroundings from the object itself.” JACOB KASSAY
Jacob Kassay's untitled work features a luminous, mirror-like surface achieved through a meticulous process of applying acrylic and silver deposit on canvas. The reflective quality of the painting actively absorbs and refracts its surrounding environment, dissolving the boundary between the artwork and the space it inhabits. This optical instability challenges traditional notions of perception, transforming the viewer's experience into one of perpetual, shifting uncertainty.
