Abdallah (Abdallah)
2010
This work belongs to Richter's celebrated series of lacquer-behind-glass pieces, which he has developed as a distinct strand of his practice since the 1970s. The technique involves applying industrial lacquer to the reverse side of glass, creating luminous, mirror-like surfaces that oscillate between depth and reflection. Titled 'Abdallah,' the work carries a personal or culturally resonant proper name, a recurring device Richter uses to ground abstract material in human reference. Mounted on Alu-Dibond, the rigid aluminum composite backing ensures the glass panel's structural integrity and flatness, while adding a sleek, contemporary finish. The result is an object that is simultaneously painting, sculpture, and mirror.
