Peder Balke

Peder Balke (1804, 1887) was a Norwegian Romantic landscape painter renowned for his dramatic depictions of Arctic Norway, particularly the northern coastlines, fjords, and the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. A student of Johan Christian Dahl, he developed a highly individual style that evolved toward an almost abstract minimalism, anticipating modernist tendencies by decades. His work gained renewed international recognition in the 21st century following major exhibitions and strong auction results at Christie's and Sotheby's.
