The Mende people of Sierra Leone have produced Sowei helmet masks, known as 'ndoli jowei,' for centuries as sacred objects used in the Sande women's society initiations. These masks, carved by male artisans yet worn exclusively by female society leaders, are among the few African mask traditions controlled by women. Characterized by their glossy black patina, ringed neck folds symbolizing prosperity, and elaborate coiffure, they represent idealized feminine beauty and spiritual power.
