Kikuji Kawada (born 1933) is a pioneering Japanese photographer known for his intensely experimental and conceptual approach to the medium. He rose to international prominence with his landmark photobook 'Chizu' (The Map, 1965), a haunting visual meditation on Japan's wartime trauma featuring close-up photographs of stains, marks, and surfaces found on the dome of the Hiroshima atomic bomb site. His work is characterized by a radical manipulation of photographic materials and darkroom techniques, blending documentary impulse with deeply subjective, symbolic imagery.
