Joseph Rusling Meeker (1827, 1889) was an American landscape painter best known for his luminous depictions of the Louisiana bayous, which he began painting after serving as a naval paymaster during the Civil War. His richly atmospheric works capture the moss-draped cypress trees and still, reflective waters of the Gulf Coast with a poetic sensitivity influenced by the Hudson River School. Meeker exhibited widely during his lifetime and is credited with bringing significant artistic attention to the unique wetland landscapes of the American South.
