José María Velasco (1840, 1912) was Mexico's most celebrated landscape painter of the 19th century, renowned for his monumental and scientifically precise depictions of the Valley of Mexico. A student of the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City, he developed a distinctive style blending Romantic naturalism with meticulous botanical and geological observation. His grand vistas of the Mexican highlands, often featuring Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, became iconic symbols of Mexican national identity.
