Godfried Schalcken was a Dutch Golden Age painter renowned for his mastery of candlelit and nocturnal scenes, producing intimate portraits and genre paintings distinguished by their luminous, glowing effects. A pupil of Samuel van Hoogstraten and Gerrit Dou, he became celebrated across Europe, working in Leiden, The Hague, and London before settling in The Hague.
