Fernando Amorsolo (1892–1972) was a Filipino painter widely regarded as the first National Artist of the Philippines, a title he received in 1972. He is celebrated for his luminous depictions of Philippine rural life, landscapes, and women bathed in sunlight, a technique he pioneered known as 'backlighting.' His idealized portrayals of the Filipino countryside and people made him one of the most beloved and prolific painters in Philippine art history.
