Bamana figures originate from the Bamana (Bambara) people of Mali, West Africa, a Mande-speaking group with a rich tradition of sculptural arts used in initiation societies such as the Jo, Gwan, and Komo. These carved wooden figures, often depicting stylized human forms with elongated features, served ceremonial, spiritual, and educational purposes within community ritual contexts. The tradition spans several centuries and represents one of the most significant and collected bodies of African art in Western museums and auction houses.
