Anton Romako (1832–1889) was an Austrian painter known for his psychologically intense portraits and history paintings that bridged Romanticism and early Expressionism. He spent many years in Rome before returning to Vienna, where his unconventional style was largely misunderstood during his lifetime. His works, particularly his dramatic naval battle scenes and probing portraits, gained significant recognition and appreciation only posthumously.
