Alessandro Magnasco (1667–1749) was an Italian Baroque painter born in Genoa, known for his dramatically lit, small-figured compositions depicting monks, witches, gypsies, and theatrical scenes in stormy, fantastical landscapes. His loose, expressive brushwork and dark, agitated style anticipated elements of Romanticism and set him apart from his contemporaries. He worked extensively in Milan and Genoa, becoming highly sought after by aristocratic and ecclesiastical patrons across northern Italy.
