Positive Space/Negative Space (Large Red/Cream)
2025
This large-scale collaboration between Shepard Fairey and Invader merges two of street art's most distinctive visual languages into a single unified composition built from silkscreened tiles mounted on wood. The red and cream color palette is immediately recognizable as Fairey's territory — drawn from his OBEY Giant propaganda aesthetic — while the tile-based substrate directly honors Invader's signature mosaic practice, turning the support itself into a conceptual statement. The title 'Positive Space/Negative Space' reflects a deliberate tension between Fairey's bold graphic forms, which rely on high-contrast figure-ground relationships, and the pixelated fragmentation that Invader introduces through the tiled medium. Together, the artists interrogate how meaning is constructed visually: where one sees a solid shape, the other sees the void around it, and the collaboration forces these philosophies into productive conflict. The work stands as a testament to the generative friction possible when two artists with equally strong visual identities cede partial control to one another.
