'Follower of Gerrit Dou' is an attribution used by auction houses and scholars to describe anonymous artists who worked closely in the style and tradition of the Dutch Golden Age master Gerrit Dou (1613–1675), founder of the Leiden fijnschilders school. These painters adopted Dou's characteristic techniques of minute detail, candlelit scenes, and intimate domestic subjects, often producing works indistinguishable from the master's own hand without rigorous scholarly analysis. Such attributions reflect the widespread influence of Dou's workshop and the broader Leiden tradition throughout the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
