The Bamileke-Bangwa people of the Fontem area in the Grassfields region of Cameroon produced some of the most dynamic and expressive figural sculpture in sub-Saharan Africa, characterized by powerful, exaggerated forms conveying spiritual authority and royal prestige. These statues, often depicting ancestors, rulers (fons), and retainers, were integral to the chiefly courts and secret societies of the region, serving ceremonial and political functions. Collected heavily during the colonial era, Bamileke-Bangwa works have achieved international renown and commanded significant prices at major auction houses worldwide.
