Abraham Janssens the Elder was a prominent Flemish Baroque painter born in Antwerp in 1575, renowned for his monumental figural compositions and altarpieces that reflect a powerful blend of Italian Renaissance influence and Northern European tradition. He studied in Rome and was deeply influenced by Caravaggio and the Carracci, bringing a bold use of chiaroscuro and classical figuration back to Antwerp. His work commanded significant presence in religious and mythological painting, and he was recognized as one of the leading painters in Antwerp before the rise of Rubens.
