Mary Sibande creates photographs, sculptures, and installations featuring her alter ego Sophie, a domestic worker who transforms into fantastical figures challenging racial and gender stereotypes. Her elaborately costumed self-portraits in vibrant purple Victorian-inspired garments, as in 'The Purple Shall Govern,' confront South Africa's apartheid legacy and domestic labor. Her work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
