Reef
2015
A tightly cropped figure appears encased in a mesh-like structure, its body contorted and compressed against a vivid, otherworldly background suggestive of an underwater environment. Braunig's meticulous oil technique renders the fabric or netting with an unsettling hyper-clarity, blurring the boundary between flesh and synthetic material. The work evokes themes of constriction and transformation, as the human form seems simultaneously entrapped and dissolved into its strange, reef-like surroundings.
