Joshu Ushibori (Ushibori in Hitachi Province)
This woodblock print from Hokusai's series "Eight Parlor Views" depicts the Ushibori area in Hitachi Province with the artist's characteristic use of Prussian blue and dynamic compositional perspective. The work captures a rural Japanese landscape with distinctive architectural and natural elements rendered in the ukiyo-e style that defined Hokusai's later career. Like much of his output, the print demonstrates sophisticated spatial recession and attention to atmospheric effects achieved through the careful layering of woodblocks.

Notes
LOT ESSAY The village of Ushibori was situated at the outlet of Lake Kasumigaura, serving as the hub of Tone River water transport. Strong winds on the lake occasionally compelled boats to anchor at Ushibori and wait for the wind to die down. The large cargo boat in this design, known as Takasebune, was designed for long-distance transportation, equipped with a small covered space for cooking and sleeping. One sailor, preparing a meal, pours off rice-washing water. The sound of splashing water breaks the silence, surprising egrets, who take flight.
