Moulin Rouge - La Goulue (d. 339; Adr. 1; W. P 1)
A pioneering example of Art Nouveau poster design, this striking lithograph by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was created in 1891 to advertise the legendary Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris. The composition boldly captures the electric atmosphere of the famous dance hall, featuring the celebrated dancer La Goulue performing the can-can before a silhouetted crowd of Parisian spectators. Printed in vibrant, flat areas of color across two sheets of wove paper by Affiches Américaines, Ch. Levy, the work revolutionized the art of the poster and cemented Toulouse-Lautrec's reputation as a master chronicler of Montmartre's nightlife.
