A Rare Small Blue And White 'boys' Cup
JIAJING SIX-CHARACTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566)
This small blue and white porcelain cup, marked and made during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1522 1566), exemplifies the refined ceramic production of sixteenth century China with its delicate underglaze blue decoration. The vessel depicts auspicious scenes of boys in leisure pursuits, a popular motif during the period that conveyed wishes for male heirs and familial prosperity. The precision of the cobalt blue painting and the quality of the porcelain body demonstrate the high technical standards maintained at imperial kilns during this culturally significant era.
