This exceptional huanghuali travelling box from the seventeenth century exemplifies Ming craftsmanship through its elegant proportions and refined construction, featuring a distinctive humpbacked carrying handle and intricately carved openwork spandrels adorned with a pair of archaistic kui dragons in opposing positions. The ingeniously designed interior accommodates multiple leisure pursuits with two reversible silver inlaid boards for both weiqi and xiangqi as well as backgammon, complemented by a stationery compartment and eight additional drawers, all secured with finely wrought bronze hardware. The combination of precious huanghuali wood with silver inlay and bronze fittings demonstrates the sophisticated integration of materials and functional design characteristic of elite Ming furniture.
