Basement Doors
Two monumental panels of machined graphite present the austere geometry of basement doors rendered in cool, industrial precision. McEwen's use of graphite — a material associated with erasure, writing, and transience — transforms an ordinary urban threshold into something heavy with latent meaning. The work hovers between the familiar and the foreboding, inviting contemplation of what lies beneath the surface.
