Grauer Spiegel

Gerhard Richter's Grauer Spiegel (Gray Mirror) from 2021 is a limited edition work consisting of gray pigments applied directly onto glass, creating a surface that simultaneously reflects and obscures the viewer's image. The piece continues Richter's longstanding exploration of the mirror as both object and concept, challenging distinctions between painting, sculpture, and reflective surface. By introducing gray pigment into the glass, Richter mutes and distorts reflection, evoking themes of ambiguity, perception, and the nature of representation. Produced in an edition of 100 with 20 artist proofs, the work makes his conceptual investigations accessible in multiples while retaining the meditative, enigmatic quality central to his practice.
