Man Leaning on a Parapet
1881
A solitary dark-clad figure stands with his back to the viewer, leaning against a stone parapet beside the Seine, with a tall tree trunk anchoring the left foreground. Rendered in Seurat's early tonal technique predating his fully developed Pointillism, the work captures the quiet melancholy of Parisian riverside life through muted, layered brushwork in warm ochres, browns, and cool greys. The compressed composition and atmospheric light anticipate the monumental figure studies Seurat would pursue throughout the 1880s. This intimate panel is a significant early work by one of the most influential figures in Post-Impressionist painting.
