Sir William MacTaggart was a leading figure in 20th century Scottish painting, grandson of the celebrated Impressionist William McTaggart, and a key member of the generation that brought European Expressionist and Post-Impressionist influences into Scottish art. His work encompasses richly coloured landscapes, flower paintings, and figurative compositions characterised by energetic brushwork, emotional intensity, and a deep engagement with the Scottish landscape and Northern European modernism, particularly the influence of Edvard Munch and the Norwegian school. MacTaggart served as President of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1959 to 1969 and was awarded a knighthood; his paintings are held in major Scottish and British public collections.
