Willard Leroy Metcalf was a prominent American Impressionist painter celebrated for his lyrical depictions of the New England landscape across seasons, earning him the nickname 'Poet Laureate of the New England Hills.' He was a founding member of The Ten, an influential group of American Impressionists who broke from the Society of American Artists in 1898 to exhibit independently, and he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris where he was directly influenced by French Impressionism. His acclaimed works such as 'May Night' (1906), which won the Corcoran Gold Medal, and 'Cornish Hills' (1911) established him as a central figure in American Impressionism.
